Those Red Devils in Manchester

Wayne Rooney
drives defenders loony
keepers does bewitch
when he runs on the pitch

Sir Alex Ferguson
rivals he had none
retired after twenty-six years
thirty-eight trophies assuaged tears

The d’Verse Form For All: the Clerihew, a comic verse on biographical topics consisting of two couplets and a specific rhyming scheme of aabb that was invented by Edmund Clerihew Bentley (1875-1956) at the age of 16. The poem deals with a person or character on the first line. In most cases, the first line names a celebrity or well-known person and the second line rhymes with the name of the person.

  1. My daughter and her boyfriend are big soccer (football) fans…I’m sure they’re familiar with Wayne Rooney. I’ve watched a few matches myself and can’t believe how those guys run so much! Thanks for playing along with the fun today, Brian.
