It’s a gamble

a chancy business, this love is
lost in first rush of desire
to parlay all hopes and knowledge
fifty-fifty at best some never try
prefer better odds at roulette

Desire: ORIGIN Middle English: from Old French desir (noun), desirer (verb), from Latin desiderare (see desiderate)
Parlay: ORIGIN late 19th cent.: from French paroli, from Italian, from paro ‘like,’ from Latin par ‘equal.’
